Sylvan Lake was originally called Kanaypokosahigan, for its snake-like shape, by the Plains Indians. At the turn of the 20th century, it was renamed Sylvan (meaning wooded) Lake by the newly arrived white settlers, for the dense forests that surround it.

Tourism is an important part of Sylvan Lake's economy, but the town is kept active by the oil and gas industries, while wheat, oats, barley, alfalfa and canola flourish in the fertile soil of the County of Red Deer.
